New York: Man driving drunk with 6-year-old almost hit sheriff's deputy in Verona, police say
A man who was driving drunk with his 6-year-old son in the car almost struck an on-duty sheriff's deputy in the Oneida County town of Verona, police said. The Oneida County deputy was on state route 13 in Verona around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night to assist state police with handling a mentally ill man, the sheriff's office said in a news release.
As the deputy was assisting, a 2004 Honda Odyssey minivan driving along route 13 almost struck him, police said. The deputy then stopped the minivan, driven by Eh Wah, 39, of Utica. Wah's 6-year-old son was in the vehicle, deputies said. After interviewing Wah and giving him field sobriety tests, the deputy suspected Wah of driving while intoxicated, police said.
Wah was charged under Leandra's Law because he was driving while intoxicated with the child in the van, police said. He was charged with driving while intoxicated with a blood alcohol content higher than .08 percent, as well as endangering the welfare of a child. He was issued traffic tickets for failing to move over for an emergency vehicle, police said.
Wah was arraigned in Verona town court and remanded to the Oneida County Jail on $10,000 cash or bond bail.
