Kansas: Kansas officer hit by cars 3 times in 4 years
A police officer in Kansas is recovering after being hit by a car during a traffic stop. It's the third time Overland Park police Officer Trenton Gunter has been hit by a car in his four-year career. The first happened in January 2013 when Gunter was T-boned in an intersection while driving with lights and sirens on. No one was hurt.
In January 2014, the officer was waiting for a vehicle to be loaded up on the highway after a crash and while he was sitting in his patrol car he was rear-ended by a drunken driver. Gunter suffered a cut to the back of his head and a retrograde concussion. In the most recent crash Sunday, he broke his leg and cut up his arm. The officer is thankful he's OK.
"I wouldn't say I've got horrible luck. I like to tell people I've been fortunate in my bad luck," Gunter said. Gunter said he had stopped a driver for speeding and was walking back to his car after initially talking to them when another driver rear-ended his car. That caused a chain reaction of pushing Gunter's vehicle into him and eventually pinning the officer between his car and the car he stopped.
"I heard screeches and I was able to see a portion of the car start to try to get to the inside lane. Fast enough that I was able to try and move to the shoulder of the road and jump, but unfortunately not fast enough," he said. "What I tell myself is that because I was able to jump and move a little just one leg being broken is better than knees or femurs or potentially hips or worse." Gunter said he was following procedures each time he was hit. He'll be out of the hospital Monday.
