Florida: Man charged with aggravated assault against police officer after cop hit with car at burglary scene

A Savannah man is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer in the Thursday burglary of a Brunswick house in which a fleeing suspect struck a city officer with a car, police said.  At 12:09 p.m. an anonymous caller reported seeing two men kick in the back door of house in the 3800 block of Ogg Avenue just north of the city limits, Glynn County Police Capt. Marissa Tindale said in a release.

The caller reported the suspects had taken a television and were in a white Buick LeSabre, Tindale said. Brunswick police officer Jean Stewart and another officer were nearby and drove to the scene where Stewart walked up to the suspect vehicle on Ogg Avenue and ordered the driver to put the LeSabre in park and get out, police have said.

The driver instead struck Stewart with the vehicle and sped away but struck a tree at Hill Street and Dudley Street, Tindale said.  The driver ran from the wrecked car but was found later hiding in the attic of a house in the 3500 block of Johnston Street, Tindale said.

Stewart was treated at Southeast Georgia Health System's emergency room for a bruised leg and swollen knee, Brunswick Police Chief Kevin Jones said Thursday. The other suspect fled on foot, police said. The burglary victim reported that two television sets, a PlayStation and an Apple iPad were missing and all items were recovered, Tindale said.

Vernon Lamar Gould, 28, of Savannah, whom police say was taken into custody in the attic, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and burglary, Tindale said.
