Canada: Halifax, Nova Scotia police officers injured as car flees downtown parking spot
A 29-year-old man has been charged after two Halifax police officers were struck by a fleeing vehicle early Friday morning. Police say around 12:30 a.m., two beat officers were walking down Sackville Street when they saw a car collide with a parked vehicle as the driver tried to leave a parking spot.
When the officers stepped onto the roadway to signal the driver to pull over, police say the driver accelerated towards them. As the car sped forward, both officers jumped out of the way, but sustained minor injuries from the side mirror. Neither officer was taken to hospital.
Having been provided a description of the vehicle, nearby units were alerted. A short while later, the driver was arrested near Sackville and Queen streets after side-swiping a police car. He will appear in court today to face charges of impaired and dangerous operation of a vehicle, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and two counts of assault of a police officer with a weapon.
