Virginia: I-95 South, SUV slams into Trooper vehicle, drives on to 2nd squad car

Medics rushed a father and three children from Interstate 95 to VCU Medical Center Saturday, after an SUV careened into two Virginia State Police cars near a disabled vehicle. The crash shut down multiple lanes of I-95 around 5:40 p.m., just north of Colonial Heights.  Before the collision, a driver stopped on the left shoulder with a flat tire, and requested help from two deputies in the area.

The deputies reported a red SUV barreling towards them in the shoulder, unable to stop. The SUV then hit a squad car and drove on top of a second police car.  The father behind the wheel of the SUV has three children, ages four, eight and nine. State Police described the injuries at the scene as "serious," and charges are pending. Both troopers and the driver of the disabled vehicle walked away from the crash site unharmed. As of early Saturday evening, it was unclear what if any distractions may have contributed to the crash.
