Texcs: Lubbock Police Officer Seriously Hurt After Struck by Vehicle
Lubbock police investigated a crash scene at the intersection of 4th and Flint Avenue that sent an officer to the hospital with serious injuries. The crash happened around 1:00 am Saturday morning. Police said the officer was at the intersection on traffic duty rerouting traffic off of 4th Street due to roadway flooding.
Police said while the officer was out of his vehicle, a car headed westbound on 4th Street struck his patrol vehicle head-on. The patrol vehicle then hit the officer, seriously injuring him. Police issued the following statement Saturday morning: This morning, Saturday, May 30, 2015, at 12:49 a.m., Officer Corey Owens was directing traffic at 4th Street and Elgin Ave. around the flooded road. He had positioned his marked police vehicle, a 2009 Ford Crown Victoria, in the westbound lanes of 4th Street with the emergency lighting activated. He was standing just west of his vehicle when a 2001 Buick Century traveling west on 4th Street struck his vehicle. The impact caused the marked unit to collide with Officer Owens.
Officer Owens was transported to UMC with serious injuries. The driver of the Buick Century had minor injuries. He was transported to UMC where he was treated and released. He was then arrested and transported to the Lubbock County Detention Center.
