New York: Driver slams into police car, other vehicle
An 84-year-old woman's car overturned after police say she smashed into another vehicle and side-swiped a parked patrol car on Sunrise Highway. The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. Monday near Hubbards Path in West Babylon. Police say an officer was parked on the side of Sunrise Highway and was assisting another driver who had been in an accident.
Lt. David Geer, of Suffolk's Highway Patrol, says Kasper was issued two summons. One was for failing to maintain her lane. The other was for violating the state's "move over" law. Geer says the law is designed to give emergency service vehicles a safety buffer from traffic. The law also requires drivers to move over one lane for snowplows, tow trucks and other emergency vehicles. Police say the 84-year-old was taken to the hospital for non-life threating injuries and is expected to be OK.
