Indiana: Officer opens fire after narrowly avoiding oncoming car; driver arrested on OWI charge
An Indianapolis Metropolitan police officer fired a shot at a car after narrowly avoiding being hit by the vehicle late Monday night. Officers later arrested the driver of that car. Around 10:20 p.m., the officer was called to the area of 42nd Street and Grand Avenue on the city’s east side to investigate a report about some stolen keys. The officer was standing in the street discussing the situation with a bystander and another person sitting in a vehicle when a speeding car came toward them. The officer heard the car accelerate and said it appeared the car intentionally veered right at them. The officer pushed one of the bystanders out of the way and jumped clear of the oncoming car.
The officer then drew his gun, firing one shot in the direction of the fleeing vehicle and striking the driver’s side door. The driver of the speeding vehicle, Ashley Eubanks, 26, Indianapolis, was arrested on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Additional charges could be filed, police said. Neither Eubanks nor the three other people inside the car were hurt; police said an 8-year-old boy was one of the passengers.
The incident remains under investigation. The officer will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure for any officer involved in a shooting.
