Connecticut: Trooper Nearly Hit By Car On Highway

A state trooper said he narrowly escaped injury when a driver sideswiped the police car he was about to exit during a weekend traffic stop. According to the state police, the crash happened about 10:45 p.m. Saturday on I-84 west, near exit 43. It involved Trooper Douglas Bernier, they said in a preliminary report. "I'm fine," Bernier said in a phone interview Monday. "I actually didn't see the car at all. It happened so fast."

"I wasn't out of the car yet," he said. "I was just about to step out of the vehicle."

The driver and sole occupant of the Honda, Christian Lopez, 23, of Groton, was transported to Hartford Hospital with what seemed like minor injuries, police said in the report.

The driver of the Dodge Caliber, Irma Borges, 32, and her passenger, Alexandra Nieves, 24, both of New Britain, also were transported to Hartford Hospital for apparent minor injuries, police said.

The report doesn't say who is at fault or whether anyone was cited in the crash.
