Canada: Medicine Hat officer struck by vehicle fleeing police

A man is in custody and facing charges after a truck fled a traffic stop, crashed into several police vehicles, and injured an officer in southeast Alberta early Thursday. Medicine Hat police officers tried to pull over a Ford F-350 truck around 1 a.m. in the area of 13th Avenue and 22nd Street S.E. after noticing, “some erratic driving. indicative of what they thought might be an impaired driver,” said Staff Sgt. Joe West with the service’s major crimes section. The vehicle immediately fled the scene and was spotted, minutes later, near Dunmore Road and Kipling Street S.E. “As officers began to assess the situation, the driver put the vehicle in reverse and struck the two officers’ vehicle behind (him),” West said. One of the officers, a nine-year member of the service, sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital where they are recovering.
