California: CHP Officer At Collision Scene Nearly Struck By Inattentive Driver
A California Highway Patrol officer was nearly hit by a vehicle at the scene of a collision on Interstate Highway 80 in Fairfield Tuesday morning, a CHP officer said. The officer was on the right shoulder clearing a collision scene just west of the West Texas Street under-crossing when he heard and saw a vehicle in the slow lane lose control and swerve directly at him, CHP Officer Chris Parker said.
The officer dove out of the vehicle’s path and down an embankment as the vehicle passed where he was standing, Parker said. The vehicle stopped in the dirt before colliding with a tree, Parker said. The driver admitted traveling at 60-70 mph while looking at the crashed cars at the accident scene and not noticing traffic stopping ahead, Parker said.
The driver panicked, hit the brakes and turned to the right to avoiding hitting the car ahead, Parker said.
