Pennsylvania: State trooper struck by car has 'a long road to recovery' says his boss
Pennsylvania State Police Sgt. Robert Bemis was supposed to be running in the Philadelphia Love Run half-marathon Sunday, rather than battling extensive injuries in an intensive care hospital bed. Bemis, 47, is in critical condition after being struck while assisting a motorist along southbound Interstate 81 Friday in Schuylkill County.
His injuries are described as "challenging" by Maj. Adam Kisthardt, director of the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in Hershey, where Bemis is coordinator of the Bureau of Training and Education. Despite his serious injuries, Bemis was thinking of the others injured in the accident, said Kisthardt, who visited him Saturday.
"He woke up, and once he started to come to his senses - he could only say a few words - he asked for paper and managed to write a note asking how the other people in the accident were doing," Kisthardt said. "That's Bob Bemis for you," Kisthardt said, adding he's known him for 15 years.
