Massachusetts: Trooper briefly dragged during vehicle stop
State police have arrested a man whose passenger jumped into the driver's seat of his car and sped away, briefly dragging a trooper. The state police gang unit and Chelsea Police Department officers stopped a car being driven by 29-year-old Luis Cortez of Dorchester for motor vehicle violations Wednesday evening. Authorities say while troopers were removing Cortez, his front seat passenger jumped over the console, got into the driver's seat and took off.
A trooper who tried to stop the car was dragged and a Chelsea officer was nearly struck. The car went about 20 feet before stopping. The suspect and a rear seat passenger escaped on foot. Cortez faces drug and motor vehicle charges. He'll likely be arraigned Thursday in Chelsea District Court. The two officers remain at work.
