California: Monterey Park officer injured in multi-vehicle crash during traffic stop
A police officer conducting a traffic stop was injured Monday morning after an oncoming vehicle struck his motorcycle, causing it to bounce off another vehicle and shove the officer into a third car. At about 7:30 a.m., a Monterey Park motor officer was conducting a traffic stop between the 1000 and 1200 block of Atlantic Avenue when a burgundy 2005 Toyota Corolla traveling southbound on Atlantic hit the officer’s motorcycle, which was parked about 15 feet behind the standing officer and the vehicle he had pulled over, said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Robert Marquez.
The motorcycle then slammed into the pulled over vehicle, bounced off and hit the officer, who was then “shoved” into a third vehicle parked in front of the car he had stopped for a traffic violation, Marquez said. It appears that the driver of the Corolla was “coughing fairly violently” and had lost sight of the roadway when she collided with the motorcycle, Marquez said.
The officer, who was standing on the driver side of the violator vehicle at the time, was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition, according to Monterey Park police Sgt. Dave Elliott. CHP Officer Jordan Richardson said the officer was complaining of pain to his right arm and back. No one else was injured.
