New York: Firefighter Struck by Fellow Firefighter's Vehicle at Litchfield Fire
A vehicle driven by a Cedarville firefighter struck a fellow firefighter as they arrived at Tuesday afternoon's fire at 437 Jerusalem Hill Road. Jones Jr., 61, of Winfield, was taken to Faxton St. Luke's Healthcare, St. Luke's campus, with multiple fractures to his leg and arm, state police said.
Troopers said a pickup truck, operated by Jared Thayer, 25, of Little Falls, was traveling west on Jerusalem Hill Road responding with his blue lights activated. Thayer said there was heavy smoke and low visibility but was driving around a vehicle parked on the shoulder when he noticed a man with a reflective fire coat trying to get out of the way, troopers said. Thayer applied his brakes but could not avoid striking Jones, troopers report.
He was issued a ticket for failure to reduce speed under special hazards, troopers said.
