Proper Blocking Saves Lives at Illinois Highway Incident

Tuesday, December 14, 2010 Palatine, IL Engine 82 was dispatched for a report of an accident on Southbound Interstate 290/Route 53. On the scene, Engine 82 positioned the apparatus to block the road including the inside shoulder protecting crews working downstream. It was a few minutes later that a vehicle traveling Southbound, too fast for conditions, lost control and struck the engine on the drivers side and was wedged between the engine and the jersey barriers on the inside shoulder. The damage to that vehicle was extensive.
