IN Safety Agency Cites County In Deputy's Death

Indiana State Agency May Fine County Sherriff Department in Deputy’s Death

Officer wasn’t wearing a reflective vest when she was struck and killed

The Associated Press is reporting that the Monroe County Indiana Sherriff’s Office may be fined in the death of Deputy Sarah Jones who was struck and killed while directing traffic on October 17 near Bloomington. Jones, 27, was not wearing a reflective vest when she was struck by a sport-utility vehicle. Indiana OSHA can levy a $4500 fine for what they term a “serious violation”. The Sheriff’s Office has reportedly now ordered 180 new vests for their deputies. (The full story may be found at the following link).

Comment: Respondersafety.com receives many inquires on whom if anyone will enforce Rule 634. We have repeatedly informed readers of sanctions that could be brought against agencies for failure to supply safety equipment and set standards for its use. It is our opinion that administrative penalties from government along with verdicts in civil litigation can be assessed against agencies who do not comply with federal or state rules.
