WISCONSIN DEPUTY STRUCK DURING CHASE DISAPPOINTED BY TEEN'S SENTENCE
A Dane County sheriff's deputy still recovering after being struck by a teenager during a high-speed chase in March said he is disappointed by the teen's sentence. Deputy Dale Veto was putting down road spikes when he was struck by Dominque Gulley, 15, on Highway 151 in Sun Prairie.
Veto remains temporarily bound to a wheelchair and is facing months of physical therapy. Gulley was sentenced Wednesday to two years in juvenile prison and 12 years probation.
But Veto and the Dane County Deputy Sheriff's Association said that Gulley should have gotten a stiffer sentence, saying that the amount of prison time should fit the severity of the crimes committed. Gulley's case was waived from adult court, where he could have faced 40 years in prison.
Authorities said the teen was travelling 85 mph when he struck Veto and kept driving, fleeing deputies at speeds up to 100 mph before the vehicle was stopped in Jefferson County. Doctors are optimistic about Veto's recovery, WISC-TV reported. He said he hopes to some day return to the ranks of the Dane County Sheriff's Department.
