NEW ORLEANS POLICE: STOLEN CAR HITS JEFFERSON PARRISH DEPUTY

A chase out of Jefferson Parish ended in New Orleans with a Jefferson Parish deputy hit by a stolen vehicle and the driver shot by other deputies, New Orleans police said Wednesday. New Orleans police arrested Ronald Veal, 30, whom they described in a news release as having an extensive arrest record, including one for murder. Veal was indicted in July 2003 on charges accusing him of killing two men the previous November _ three months after he himself was shot in the head and hospitalized in intensive care.

The deputies were chasing a stolen vehicle when it hit a deputy, then crashed, Officer Sabrina Richardson, a police spokeswoman, said in the news release. She said the driver was shot in the shoulder and ran, but was chased down.

A bullet hit a 27-year-old female passenger in the hand, and a 3-year-old child found in the car was taken to the hospital for a precautionary check, Richardson said. She said the woman was in good condition.

The deputy hit by the vehicle was listed in good condition with a minor leg injury, and Veal was being treated, the news release said. It said that when Veal is released, he will be booked with four counts of attempted murder of a peace officer and one of possessing stolen property. The vehicle had been reported stolen Sunday, Richardson said.
