KENTUCKY OFFICER STRUCK BY ALLEGED DRUNK DRIVER
A Harold, Ky., man is facing charges in Knox County, Ind., after allegedly fleeing authorities and resisting arrest Sunday night, according to an Indiana State Police news release. Perry Kingsley, 59, is being held at the Knox County Jail on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, driving while intoxicated and obstructing traffic.
According to the release, state police and Knox County Sheriff's deputies were investigating a domestic complaint in Oaktown when they spotted a Chevrolet pickup truck stopped in the roadway nearby. When officers signaled for the driver, later identified as Kingsley, to proceed forward, he reportedly turned off his headlights and stayed in the roadway, obstructing traffic.
A trooper approached the vehicle and detected an odor of alcohol, the release said, but Kingsley reportedly put his truck in reverse and began going backward. Police say Kingsley refused orders to stop, even as his driver's side mirror sideswiped a trooper and struck a deputy.
Kingsley then put his truck in drive and led authorities on a short pursuit before police boxed his vehicle in about two miles north of Oaktown, according to the release. He reportedly exited the truck but would not follow orders and tried to get back in, the release said.
Troopers used a chemical agent to remove Kingsley from the truck and take him into custody. The release said officials determined Kingsley was legally intoxicated. The deputy struck by the mirror was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was treated and released for minor injuries.
