FLORIDA OFFICER STRUCK BY VEHICLE
An Ormond Beach police officer is recovering after being hit by a truck while responding to a call. Police said Jamie Gogarty was called to a parking lot at Granada and Williamson boulevards after reports of a driver going in circles and hitting cars there.
Investigators said when Gogarty arrived, he ordered the driver Walter Weiss, 75, to stop. Once the officer saw Weiss was not getting out the truck as ordered, Gogarty tasered him who in turn stepped on the gas pedal and ran him over. “Stomped on the gas and ended up crashing into that tree right there. Also, crashing into the motorcycle which was parked there. The officer standing beside it. The motorcycle falls over onto the officer’s leg, injures his leg. So we’ve got an officer in the hospital right now. As far as I know, it’s not life-threatening. It’s a leg injury of some type,” said Sgt. Kenny Hayes from the Ormond Beach Police Department.
Both men were taking to Ormond Beach Memorial Hospital. Gogarty was treated and released. Police are now trying to figure out if Weiss may have been suffering a medical condition.
