BELLEVUE, WASHINGTON POLICE OFFICER HIT BY CAR
A police officer was hit by a car while directing traffic on Friday, the department said. Police spokesman Greg Grannis said the officer was directing traffic at the scene of an accident at 111th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 4th Street when a car traveling east on 4th struck him just before 6 p.m.
The unidentified officer was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He underwent surgery on Friday night and was expected to be hospitalized for several days. The officer is a 9-year veteran of the force.
A 75-year-old Bellevue was behind the wheel of the 2008 Audi TT that struck the officer. It was not immediately known what had caused him to hit the officer. A field sobriety test confirmed that alcohol was not a factor.
Police shut down 4th Street between 110th an d112th for about three hours following the incident to investigate.
