SUSPECT WHO HIT CALIFORNIA DEPUTY WITH PATROL CAR IS KILLED
A man who jumped into a sheriff's patrol vehicle, drove off and hit a deputy was shot and killed by deputies Friday night, deputies said. An Orange County Sheriff's Department deputy called for backup about 7 p.m. when he noticed a suspicious person at the intersection of Shakespeare and Martha Ann Drive. When the second deputy arrived, the two began to approach the man.
The man then reportedly jumped into the first deputy's patrol car and ran over the second deputy, sheriff's spokesman Damon Micalizzi said.
The deputies opened fire on the man while he was still driving. He smashed into a light pole and was transported to a hospital, where he died.
The deputy who was struck by the patrol vehicle was treated for his injuries. He is stable and is expected to recover, Micalizzi said.
The names of deputies and the suspect have not been released.
