PHOENIX POLICE LOOKING FOR MAN WHO STRUCK OFFICER

At 1430 hr. on January 19, officers from the Desert Horizon Precinct were in the area of the trailer park at 17217 N. 17th Avenue looking for a subject wanted by Document Crimes on a forgery charge; Joseph Schrody (W/M, 02-12-76). Officers Hilyard and Walter made contact with Schrody in the trailer park and attempted to take him into custody. However, the suspect refused commands to surrender and began backing away in his vehicle, a 2004 Chevrolet 4-door passenger car.

The suspect then accelerated forward and the right front quarter panel of the vehicle struck Officer Hilyard. As a result of the suspect’s actions, Officer Hilyard fired two rounds from his handgun at the vehicle’s right front tire and flattened it. Officer Hilyard was not injured as a result of being struck by the suspect vehicle.

The suspect fled from the trailer park in the vehicle, going northbound on 17th Avenue and then he lost control as he attempted to turn westbound onto Angela. The vehicle left the roadway and became disabled at the northwest corner of that intersection. The suspect then fled on foot into the apartment complex at 17425 N. 19th Avenue. Officers gave chase but lost sight of him in the complex.

Tactical officers responded and checked the apartment of the suspect’s girlfriend, but the suspect was not located and he remains outstanding. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Suspect Schrody is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6141 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS.
