DRUG-INFLUENCED DRIVER WHO STRUCK MINNESOTA TROOPER RECEIVES 9-MONTH JAIL SENTENCE
The trucker who hit a Minnesota State trooper who had pulled over another car on I-94 in Sauk Centre has been sentenced Thursday to 9 months in jail.
46-year-old Donald Kerkau of St. Louis, Mich., pleaded guilty in November to criminal vehicular injury and driving under the influence.
Kerkau was driving a tractor-trailer when he hit Trooper Gregg Gerhartz on June 5, 2007. Gerhartz was making a traffic stop when he was struck by Kerkau’s vehicle. Gerhartz broke his leg. Toxicology reports show that Kerkau had marijuana and cocaine in his system.
According to the criminal complaint, Kerkau admitted he had dozed off and didn’t see the squad car or flashing lights until it was too late. The Stearns County attorney sentenced Kerkau to the same amount of time Trooper Gregg Gerhartz was out of work, plus 90 days.
