LONG ISLAND OFFICER REAR-ENDED BY DRUNK DRIVER; SERIOUSLY INJURED
A Nassau County police officer is in serious condition in an intensive-care unit after being struck by a driver who authorities say was intoxicated. Police say 22-year veteran Officer Gennaro Ferraro suffered head and back trauma when his parked police vehicle was struck by a rented car on the Long Island Expressway.
The driver was hospitalized with a possible collapsed lung, and his passenger suffered a possible broken leg. Police say 24-year-old Paul Reid Jr. will face charges including vehicular assault, driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. Reid has no working listed telephone number, and no information was immediately available on whether he has an attorney.
