U.K. MAN CHARGED WITH GROSS BODILY HARM OVER POLICE HIT-AND-RUN
A 41-year-old man has been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent to a police officer who was run down trying to detain a fraud suspect, Scotland yard said.The hit-and-run happened as Detective Constable Catherine Corbett and three other West Midlands Police officers tried to arrest a man near Heathrow Airport on Friday morning.
Rashpal Singh was also charged with two counts of actual bodily harm against two male officers, Scotland Yard said. He will appear in custody at Hendon Magistrates' Court, north-west London on today. Det Con Corbett, 39, of Solihull, West Midlands, remains in a critical condition in the neurological unit in London's Charing Cross Hospital.
A 32-year-old woman arrested in connection with the incident has been released on bail. She will return to a west London police station at a future date.
The collision happened shortly after 8am outside a hotel towards the north of the west London airport. Det Con Corbett received serious head injuries when she was hit by the car after trying to arrest the man.
As the suspect left the car park in a blue Peugeot 207 he collided with a black Ford Focus, damaging its front bumper and bonnet. Two other male officers sustained minor injuries in the collision after they were carried for a short distance on the bonnet of the Peugeot. The car was later found abandoned nearby. Det Con Corbett, who was awarded a commendation for outstanding work in 1993, had been in London for two days investigating the case before Friday's incident.
