MARYLAND TROOPER DRAGGED BY CAR AFTER TRAFFIC STOP
Authorities say a Maryland State Police trooper was dragged a short distance when a Virginia man he stopped tried to flee the scene. George M. Taylor, 23, of Horntown, Va. was arrested and charges against him in the incident are pending. He is wanted by police in Worcester County on charges of first- and second-degree assault, use of a handgun in the commission of a felony, possession of a handgun and reckless endangerment.
State police say about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, the unidentified trooper stopped a car for speeding on Route 667 just north of Pocomoke City. Police say a computer check on the driver revealed he was wanted in Worcester County.
Police say the trooper ordered Taylor out of the car at gunpoint, but Taylor put the car in drive. The trooper tried to put the car into park but police say Taylor drove off, dragging the trooper a short distance alongside the car.
According to police the trooper fired one shot from his pistol, struck a tire and deflated it. The trooper was then able to free himself from the moving vehicle.
Police say the trooper then got back into his cruiser and pursued Taylor from Route 667 onto Overhold Road. About two miles from the original stop, Taylor drove his car behind a house and shed in the 3200-block of Overhold Road. Police say he then ran into the house. Troopers surrounded the house and ordered him to come out. Police say that at about 15 minutes later Taylor came out and surrendered without incident.
Neither Taylor nor the trooper was injured in the incident. Because the trooper fired his gun he was placed on routine administrative leave as is standard procedure.
