TEXAS POLICE SHOOT S.U.V. DRIVER WHO TRIED TO HIT OFFICER

A 31-year-old man was fatally shot by Mesquite police Sunday morning after trying to run over an officer following a chase, police said. Officers pursued Steven E. Shaw, who was driving a sport utility vehicle, through southern Mesquite and into Balch Springs. An officer had seen a suspicious vehicle – Mr. Shaw's SUV – parked on Picadilly Boulevard at 3:43 a.m. It sped off when the officer pulled behind it.

Police said the officer attempted to pull over Mr. Shaw, but he refused and the chase ensued. It ended when the SUV went through a yard in the 4800 block of Carolyn Jean Street and into a field northeast of Interstate 20 and LBJ Freeway.

When Mr. Shaw couldn't find a way out of the field, police said, he drove back the way he had entered. Two Mesquite police officers blocked his escape with their squad cars, forcing Mr. Shaw to stop. When officers approached the vehicle, Mr. Shaw backed up, then drove at one of the officers, police said. Both officers fired at the SUV.

Mr. Shaw was struck and his vehicle veered into some brush. He was taken to Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, where he was pronounced dead. Mr. Shaw was on parole for assault on a public servant and possession of cocaine, police said.
