SOUTH CAROLINA DEPUTY HIT BY CAR DURING TRAFFIC STOP

Authorities say a suspect struck a Beaufort County deputy with his vehicle during a traffic stop Thursday night. Sheriff's Col. Neil Baxley says the deputy managed to fire back, injuring the driver, who then led police on a chase that reached speeds of 100 mph.

Authorities says the vehicle wrecked near Exit 5 on Interstate 95, and the driver was taken to the hospital. Baxley says the deputy also was treated at the hospital. He wouldn't release the name of the suspect or the injured officer. The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting.
