FLORIDA OFFICER INJURED AFTER HUMMER CRASH
A Davie police officer was injured in a crash Wednesday afternoon on State Road 84, just east of University Drive, after a woman drove her Hummer into the back of an unmarked cruiser. Witnesses told police that the female driver made no effort to stop.
Lt. Paul Brugman was working an off-duty detail on State Road 84 protecting road workers. Investigators said Brugman was sitting in his cruiser with the emergency lights flashing when his vehicle was hit from behind. The cruiser was struck with such force that the trunk of the vehicle was pushed in to the front seat, trapping the police officer inside.
Davie fire rescue workers said Brugman was pinned so tightly in the vehicle that they had to use Jaws of Life to cut him from the passenger's side of the vehicle. He was transported to Broward General Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition. Brugman is a 21-year veteran of the Davie Police Department.
The driver of the Hummer was transported to Memorial East with minor injuries. Investigators said the air bags in the vehicle didn't deploy and that the vehicle had little damage, with only a broken signal light. Charges are pending against the woman, and investigators are investigating whether alcohol was involved in the crash.
