BRONX OFFICER DRAGGED BY CAR OF FLEEING SUSPECT

A police officer was injured after being dragged along a Bronx street by a car driven by a drug suspect early this morning. Police said the officer, a 7-year veteran, was on foot patrol in the Eastchester section of the Bronx, when he noticed two men smoking what he believed was marijuana in a 1996 Pontiac sedan.

When the officer approached the car near East 228th Street and White Plains Road, the driver of the car sped away, towing the officer with him.

As he was dragged, the officer managed to fire his gun, striking the driver's leg, police said. A police van then chased the car from Yonkers to East 233rd Street and Bronx River Parkway, where they were apprehended.

Police said the suspects, both black men in their 30s, tossed bags of marijuana and cocaine from the car as they fled. Police said they also found marijuana and cocaine in the vehicle. The officer is recovering from minor injuries at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx. The driver of the car is recovering from the gunshot wound at Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx.
