INDIANA TROOPER SERIOUSLY INJURED WHEN HIT DURING TRAFFIC STOP
An Indiana State Police trooper was seriously injured when he was struck by a white box truck Wednesday morning in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 465, between Interstate 69 and Allisonville Road, as he tried to make a traffic stop.
State police said the trooper, identified as Hank Kalina, is normally assigned to do security detail for the governor. Kalina is an eight-year veteran of ISP.
Kalina was listed in serious but stable condition at Methodist Hospital, where he was taken by helicopter soon after the crash. He had possibly suffered a broken leg, 6News' Jennifer Carmack reported.
According to police, the officer had pulled over a car driven by Katrina Bowen-Davis, 29, of Carmel, and was on the passenger side of the car when the truck, owned by Richards Rest Inc., and driven by Andrew Yoder, 63, hit it. Bowen-Davis' condition was not immediately known. Yoder was not injured.
"In the past few years, because of officers getting hit ... officers have begun walking on the passenger side of the vehicle to try to keep themselves safe," said ISP Sgt. Ray Poole. "Thank God that he did, because the outcome could have been totally different."
Several other people in the car, including a child, suffered minor injuries.
Eastbound lanes of I-465 were closed for several hours near the crash. It was not immediately clear if Yoder will face charges.
