THREE MARYLAND CHILDREN, TEEN HIT AT SCHOOL BUS STOP
Police said a car hit three children and a teenager in a hit-and-run accident at a school bus stop in Charles County Tuesday morning. Police said the incident occurred on Glen Albin Road near Crain Highway in La Plata around 8:30 a.m.
Three children were sitting on a sidewalk waiting for the school bus when the vehicle left the roadway and hit them. Witnesses said a 4-year-old was dragged into the other children, all of which were boys.
The car continued toward St. Mary's Avenue. Witnesses said it slowed down but continued and ran a stop sign at the end of the block. The vehicle was found in the St. Charles area of Waldorf. Deputies arrested the driver, identified as Jacqueline E. Simmons, 29, of King George, Va. According to a sheriff's report, a deputy administered three field sobriety tests and Simmons failed two.
The deputy said he did not smell alcohol on her breath. The report said the defendant admitted that she was addicted to methadone and was on her way to a methadone clinic but had not had any on Tuesday.
Authorities said two of the children, the 4-year-old and a 9-year-old, were flown to Children's Hospital National Medical Center in the District in serious condition. Another 9-year old was taken to a nearby hospital and a 17-year-old was treated and released at the scene. Police said the children went to Walter Mitchell Elementary School and were being supervised by an adult and a 17-year-old. Simmons was charged with driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol, driving while impaired by a controlled drug substance, failure to stop after an accident with injury and failure to stop at a stop sign, authorities said.
