HOMELAND SECURITY OFFICER SHOOTS SUSPECT IN CHEST
An off-duty homeland security officer shot an assault suspect who was running from police on Friday, authorities said. A restaurant owner was allegedly stabbed by a man, who then fled. The restaurateur said he followed the man, keeping police updated on his whereabouts.
The man lunged at a police officer at Seventh and Harrison streets when the officer tried to arrest him. The officer fell backward, and then a car struck and pinned him underneath, police said. The homeland security officer apparently began aiding in the chase at that point, chasing the man to Sixth and Harrison streets.
The suspect was shot in the chest, police said. The police officer had to be rescued from underneath the vehicle and was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect suffered life-threatening injuries and remained hospitalized on Saturday June 2.
