CLOSE CALL FOR ALABAMA TROOPER NEAR SELMA
Trooper Brian Manley's car didn't make it but it looks like he will. He received non-life threatening injuries and was air-lifted to Baptist South in Montgomery. The incident happened around 12:15 on Highway 80 West, some 3 miles from Selma. Manley had just pulled over a motorist on a routine stop. Manley went back to his trooper car and while sitting in his car, an F-150 pick up plowed into Manley's car. The left end of Manley's car was crunched up to the front, entrapping the trooper for several minutes before emergency crews could extricate him.
Authorities state that it's too early to say if the pick up driver violated the 'move-over' law. Alabama lawmakers passed that law one year ago and it's designed to get drivers to simply move over when they see an emergency vehicle parked in the shoulder. The other two drivers were not seriously hurt.
One story of inspiration. Trooper Manley gave a 'thumbs up' and was talking as he was being loaded up in the helicopter. He is 27 years old and has been a trooper for 3 years.
