CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA ENGINE STRUCK AND FIREFIGHTERS INJURED

On Sunday June 10 in Charlotte (North Carolina), Engine 22 was operating at a crash on the southbound side of I-85 and Engine 11 was on the northbound side...both working that minor MVC that was on the northbound side. The fire apparatus driver of E-22 was the on the southbound side, wearing proper protective gear. A car traveling at a high rate of speed ran into the back of Engine 22. After rescue and treatment by CFD crews, the driver of that car later died at the hospital. Just prior, traffic was heavy and fast and CFD crews had just requested some police units to assist with traffic control. The fire apparatus driver was hit by debris and hurt his back trying to get out of the way. The other firefighter was injured trying to get over the wall to the "car vs apparatus crash"....but all are now fine.
