CALIFORNIA OFFICER FIRES AT CAR AFTER BEING HIT
A Chula Vista police officer was hit by a car during a traffic stop on Thursday. According to police officials, the incident occurred at about 1:45 p.m. on Main Street near Hilltop Drive. Police said the female officer was gathering information from the occupants of the '90s model car when its driver quickly pulled away from the curb, knocking the officer, who fired once at the fleeing vehicle, to the ground.
The fleeing car turned north on Melrose Avenue and eventually stopped at Los Niños Park in the 1550 block of Max Avenue, according to investigators. The driver, Chula Vista resident Ricardo Duena, 18, and his female passenger abandoned the car and fled on foot, police said. Investigators said Duena and his passenger were spotted on the porch of a home on Slate Court. They were taken into custody after a short pursuit, according to police.
The officer was not seriously injured during the incident, according to police. Duena is now facing a charge of assault on a peace officer. He is being held on $175,000 bail and is due in court on Monday.
