ALBERTA, CANADA FIREFIGHTER SURVIVES BULLDOZING INCIDENT NEAR FORT MCMURRAY
A firefighter battling a blaze near Fort McMurray was run over by a bulldozer and survived the ordeal thanks to the spongy northern Alberta terrain.
The woman was on an all-terrain vehicle leading two bulldozers toward a fire south of the Suncor Energy oilsands plant on the weekend.
One of the bulldozer drivers lost sight of her and drove over the vehicle she was riding on. But the woman simply sank into the spongy muskeg. Other firefighters pulled her out and she was airlifted to hospital with a badly broken arm and an injured ear.
Barry Harrison, a spokesman for Alberta Workplace Health and Safety, said the muskeg may have saved her life. But he said there are questions about how the bulldozer driver could have lost sight of her.
