MISSOURI OFFICER CUT OUT OF CAR AFTER ACCIDENT ON I-55

A 32-year-old St. Louis man is now accused of driving while intoxicated and second-degree assault for an accident that injured a city police officer.

The accident happened Tuesday night on Interstate 55. The officer was on the southbound shoulder for a routine traffic stop when a van rear-ended his police cruiser, then flipped over the car, pinning the officer inside.

The officer, whose name was not released, was treated and released at Saint Louis University Hospital. Police identify the van driver as Gary McCabe Junior. Police say witnesses saw the van weaving in and out of traffic lanes moments before the accident.
