MAN TRIED TO HIT LOUISIAN DEPUTY WITH CAR
A New Iberia man was arrested on an attempted murder charge Tuesday after he reportedly tried to run over an Iberia Parish sheriff’s deputy with his car. Damien G. Batiste, 25, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, resisting an officer and violation of a protective order. He was booked into the Iberia Parish Jail on a $150,000 bond. A deputy responded to a 911 hangup call at Gemini Pool at 8:43 a.m. Upon arriving, the deputy learned one of the employees, Cassie Perry, had a restraining order against Batiste, who also works at the business.
When the deputy tried to speak to Batiste, he ran out of the business and got into a car parked at Queen City Plaza. The deputy ordered Batiste out of the car, but he refused. Hebert said Batiste then sped out of the parking lot, forcing the deputy to jump out of the way to avoid being hit. Later in the day, deputies contacted Batiste by phone and advised him to turn himself in. He was booked into the jail at 6:44 p.m.
