MAN LEAVES CRASH SCENE AFTER HITTING FLORIDA TROOPER
Police in Oakland Park are searching for the man they said hit a Florida Highway Patrol trooper on Interstate 95 near Cypress Creek Road Monday morning. The trooper was in the southbound lane of I-95 when his patrol car was struck from behind by a black SUV. The trooper told officials that he was completing a police report when the black SUV came from behind and hit him.
The man was last seen running on Andrews Avenue. Officials set up a perimeter just north of Cypress Creek Road on Andrews Avenue around an Alpine Dealership, Marriott hotel and a Regal Cinema. Police said they think the man either got into a limo or cab at the Marriott and took off. He was dropped off in the area of Northwest 13th Avenue and First Street in Dania Beach.
Sgt. Mark Wysocki said he thinks the suspect may have hailed a taxicab.
"He possibly got into a cab and went south, and we're in the process of checking that out also," Wysocki, a Florida Highway patrolman, said.
The trooper was released just before 5 p.m. from Broward General Medical Center. Officials are looking for a black man who they said is 5 foot 7 inches tall and weighs between 225 and 250 pounds. He is described as being in his mid-20s and wearing a white oversized T-shirt and blue jeans.
"It takes a lot of nerve to do that," Wysocki said. "We don't know why he fled the scene, maybe an issue with the vehicle or a suspended license. Those are all things we're going to determine later."
