BILLBOARD REMEMBERS TWO FALLEN WISCONSIN HIGHWAY WORKERS

Two fallen Winnebago County Highway Department workers are not forgotten.

A billboard sign remembering Marc A. Neumeyer, 55, of Neenah and Daniel G. Melhorn, 53, of Oshkosh is located along Highway 41 near the area where the two highway workers were killed a little more than a year ago. When traveling south from Neenah the billboard is on the east side of Highway 41 south of the Breezewood exit, said Bob Stellmacher, who works for the Winnebago County Highway Department. He said Melhorn's son, Nate, had the idea for the sign.

"Both Marc and Dan were wonderful people in their own individual ways," Stellmacher said. "Both were full of life and they loved their jobs."

Neumeyer and Melhorn were killed March 7 of last year when they were patching a hole at the end of the southbound lane of Highway 41. A semitrailer struck a station wagon, then veered into a parked highway department truck before hitting the two men.

Stellmacher said the fatal accident has made highway department workers more aware of traffic as they work on roads and highways.
