NEW YORK CITY OFFICER STRUCK BY HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER IN QUEENS
Sergeant John Pagnotta is at Jamaica Hospital and he is all the reminder of just how dangerous his job is, and how suddenly that danger can present itself. It happened at 122nd Avenue and Sutphin Boulevard in South Jamaica, Queens. The sergeant was in uniform but in an unmarked car when he pulled alongside a 2006 Yukon Denali. Officials say the sergeant got out of his car, approached the suspect's vehicle and that driver sped away -- not only hitting the sergeant but dragging him more than 30 feet through the street. He finally worked himself free. The vehicle was later found abandoned on 139th Avenue. Police say it was not a stolen vehicle. They are looking for its owner, Walter Hurdle, a 50-year-old male black. Police dogs tracked a scent from the SUV, but so far they have no one in custody. The sergeant is a 17-year veteran of the force. He is at the hospital in stable condition with three broken ribs and a whole lot of scrapes and bruises.
