CALIFORNIA DRIVER WANTED TO HIT POLICE

The driver who terrorized a swath of central San Francisco with a series of hit-and-run crashes was out to get a police officer but settled on hurting ordinary pedestrians when he couldn't find one, prosecutors said Thursday. Omeed A. Popal faces 18 counts of attempted murder for the rampage Tuesday where he deliberately struck and injured pedestrians with his SUV in about a dozen different places.
