CHP OFFICER INJURED IN 55 FREEWAY ACCIDENT
A 38 year old CHP officer conducting a routine traffic stop on the 55 Costa Mesa freeway was struck and seriously injured by a vehicle that plowed into his patrol car. Officer Steven Wells had stopped a Honda Civic, which he was approaching on foot from the right, when a Jeep Cherokee lost control and struck his patrol car, knocking Wells down and breaking his leg. Wells' cruiser was pushed into the vehicle he had stopped, slightly injuring that driver as well.
