  • New York: State Trooper Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle Along I-81

    New York State Police Superintendent Joseph A. D’Amico is saddened to announce the death of Trooper Christopher G. Skinner. Trooper Skinner was last assigned to the Traffic Incident Management Unit (TIM Detail), Troop C, Delaware County. Around noon today (May 29), Trooper Skinner was outside his marked State Police car conducting a vehicle and traffic stop on I-81 north of exit 6, between Chenango Bridge and Castle Creek, Broome County, when he was struck by a passing vehicle.   • Tennessee: Nashville Officer Struck, Killed on Interstate

    Officials say a Nashville police officer was killed when he was struck by a motor home on Interstate 65. The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department said Officer Michael Petrina was directing traffic on the interstate after a vehicle overturned Saturday morning, May 10, 2014. Police spokesman Don Aaron said the driver of a motor home, identified as 71-year-old Dean Joseph Diver of Key Largo, Florida, hit Petrina. The officer died at the scene.   • Virginia Family: Henrico Tow-Truck Driver Died Keeping us Safe

    A Richmond family involved in an accident on Interstate 295 last week is organizing a fundraiser for the tow-truck driver killed in the crash. Jason Bailey, 22, was killed in Thursday's crash, while towing Avonnia Jewel Gregory's car on the side of the interstate. Bailey leaves behind a son, who is less than a year old. "If it wasn't for his persistence in requesting for us to leave as he handled the task of securing my daughter's vehicle onto the flat bed, it would have been us who was hit by the drunk driver," writes Annovia's mother, Jewel Gregory. The family went to Bailey's viewing Sunday and was touched.

  • Los Angeles Police Officer Dies of Struck-By Injuries

    Relatives, friends and thousands of uniformed officers gathered for the funeral of 51-year-old Los Angeles police motorcycle Officer Chris Cortijo, hailing him as a guardian angel who watched over Southland motorists for more than two decades. Cortijo, a 26-year-veteran and former Marine, was struck April 5 by an SUV driven by an allegedly drug-impaired driver while stopped at a red light at Lankershim Boulevard and Saticoy Street in Sun Valley. He died four days later.     A veteran LAPD motorcycle officer died Wednesday, several days after he was struck by an SUV driven by a woman suspected of being under the influence of cocaine. Fellow officers and family members had been holding vigil for Chris Cortijo — a member of the department for nearly 27 years — at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center since the Saturday accident.   • Texas: Dallas Firefighter Has Died After Fall Off Icy Highway Bridge

    Icy road conditions in an around Dallas made for treacherous road conditions Monday evening. Dallas Fire Rescue is now confirming Firefighter William Scott Tanksley died after falling from an icy highway overpass onto the highway below. Firefighter Tanksley is reported to be a 14-year veteran assigned to Station 12. He was married and had three children. According to initial information, Tanksley was working at the scene of an accident at the intersection of Interstate 20 and Spur 408 when he tumbled to the pavement below. There were reports the firefighter may have been hit by a vehicle. Emergency vehicles had a difficult time reaching the scene because icy conditions were slowing traffic, and a helicopter ambulance was not an option due to the unfavorable weather.   • New York: State Trooper Dies After Crash on Thruway

    A New York state trooper died Tuesday from injuries he suffered when his police cruiser was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer shortly after he pulled over a car for speeding on the Thruway, authorities said. Trooper David Cunniff, 35, was inside his patrol car behind the car he had pulled over on Interstate 90's eastbound lanes around 8:20 p.m. Monday, when his cruiser was hit by the big rig and he was partially thrown from his vehicle.   • New Mexico: Officer Hit by Car on Icy I-25 Dies of His Injuries

    Sandoval County sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Baron, who was injured Thursday while investigating a weather-related crash on Interstate 25, died Friday afternoon despite what Sheriff Doug Wood described as a “gallant” effort by hospital staff to save his life. The 47-year-old Baron, an eight-year veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, had been listed in critical but stable condition after being hit by a car while investigating a crash on roads made dangerous by a snowstorm that hit the state.     Kalyanarat Ranasinghe an NYPD traffic enforcement agent was struck and killed by a truck at a Manhattan intersection on Saturday afternoon November 30, police and witnesses said. The unidentified male agent was hit by an industrial vacuum truck about 2:45 p.m. on East 44th Street, between Fifth and Madison avenues, witnesses said.   • Maryland: Perryville Volunteer Fire Police Officer Struck While Directing Traffic Has Died

    David Barr Sr., a Perryville volunteer firefighter who was hit by a car while directing traffic last month, died Thursday morning November 7, 2013. He was 65. On October 25 Barr was working as a fire police captain, managing the traffic around an accident on Route 40 near the Maryland 222 intersection when he got hit, rolled up on the hood of the car and laid on the highway with severe head injuries.
