• New Jersey Crossing Guard Killed by Car is Fondly Remembered

  When Joseph Dotterman became a crossing guard in his retirement, the doting, caring man seemed to embody the job.He never let a family member out of the house during nasty weather without telling them to be safe in their travels, and on the job, he told even adults to put on a hat in cold weather. Dotterman, 73, died at Hackensack University Medical Center on Saturday, three days after he was hit by a van while he was on-duty, crossing a man at the intersection of Mehrhof Road at Washington Avenue in Little Ferry.

• NJ DOT Employee Struck and Killed While Helping Motorist

  Both the striking motorist and the DOT employee were rushed to a nearby hospital. The motorist remains in serious condition. Joseph Kealey the DOT employee later died

• Vermont Firefighter Dies Helping Stranded Motorist

  A Shoreham firefighter died in the line of duty while helping a fellow resident whose vehicle had slid into a ditch off an icy Richville Dam Road on Sunday, Dec. 27.
