(AR) Vehicle strikes and kills tow truck operator in Desha County

A tow truck operator died about 8:20 p.m. Thursday, October 24, 2024 when he was struck and killed on U.S. 65 near Mitchellville (Desha County).

According to a preliminary Arkansas State Police report, James Jones, 30, of Dumas was the operator of a 2007 model Freightliner with a flatbed that was on the southbound shoulder of the highway.

Jones was operating the wrecker when a 2015 model Chevrolet, southbound on the highway, hit him as he was standing outside the vehicle. He came to rest on the southbound shoulder.

Jones died at the scene.

The driver of the Chevrolet was not injured and was not identified in the ASP report.

The weather was clear and the road was dry.

Cpl. Gordon J. Seawood investigated the wreck for the Arkansas State Police.

Jones was a log truck driver who worked part time for Whaley’s Collision. He is survived by his wife, Kristy, one daughter, and other relatives. Arrangements are being handled by Griffin Funeral Home of Dumas.
