(VA)(10-8-2023) VDOT service patroller dies in crash while helping disabled vehicle
A Virginia Department of Transportation safety service patroller died Sunday in Hampton after a car crashed into him as he was assisting a disabled vehicle.
Craig Boone of Norfolk was outside of his VDOT vehicle assisting with a disabled car on the shoulder of the Interstate 64 eastbound lanes at the Big Bethel overpass just after 1 a.m., according to a release from the Virginia State Police. Boone’s Ford truck had its arrow board illuminated to tell drivers to avoid the shoulder.
State police said shortly after, Alana F. Diomande of Yorktown was travelling eastbound when she “ran off the road, crossed over the fog line and into the right shoulder, sideswiping the Ford truck and striking Boone.”
Boone, 52, died at the scene. According to state police, Diomande, 27, is charged with driving under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, obstruction and curse and abuse. The investigation is ongoing.
